Madrigal Pharmaceuticals, Inc. acquired the assets of VIA Pharmaceuticals in September 2011
VIA is building a pipeline of small-molecule drugs that target cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity and dyslipidemia are highly prevalent world-wide and have both genetic and environmental etiologies. Ultimately, these metabolic diseases progress into more severe forms of diabetes and cardiovascular disease leading to diabetic complications such as blindness, heart attacks and strokes.
VIA’s drug development pipeline includes VIA-3196, a Phase-1 ready liver-directed Thyroid Hormone Beta Agonist that targets dyslipidemia, including high LDL cholesterol, high triglycerides and elevated Lp(a). The Phase 1 clinical trials planned for VIA-3196 in 2011 will provide safety information, and demonstrate proof of concept for LDL cholesterol lowering. VIA also has a preclinical lead optimization program to identify a Diacylglycerol Acyl Transferase 1 (DGAT1) inhibitor for diabetes, with upside potential in weight control and dyslipidemia. VIA’s 5-LO inhibitor, VIA-2291, targets a significant unmet medical need – reducing the rupture of atherosclerotic plaques, which is an underlying cause of heart attack, stroke and other vascular diseases. VIA completed three Phase 2 clinical trials with VIA-2291 in patients with cardiovascular disease to provide evidence for the plaque-modifying and systemic anti-inflammatory activities as early as possible in the clinical development process. No further internal clinical studies are planned for VIA-2291 which has been designated for outlicensing.
